Herb Hall
Herbert L. Hall, born on March 28, 1907, in Reserve, Louisiana, was an American
jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist. He began his musical career playing
guitar and banjo with the Niles Jazz Band from 1923 to 1925 before switching to
woodwinds. Hall performed with Kid Augustin Victor in Baton Rouge and Sidney
Desvigne in New Orleans before joining trumpeter Don Albert’s band, with whom he
performed from 1929 to 1940. He subsequently relocated to Philadelphia and then
New York City, where he worked with Herman Autrey and Doc Cheatham, toured
