Son of actor Jean Garat, Émile Henri Camille Garassu dit Henri Garat (also known
as Henry Garat) was born in Paris on April 3, 1902. Before establishing himself
as a singer and actor, he worked in various odd jobs as a waiter and department
store clerk between 1912 and 1918, then entered the Brussels Conservatoire
before working as a "boy" at the Casino de Paris and as an extra at the
Moulin-Rouge. Introduced to show business, he made his debut in 1924 with
Mistinguett and, two years later, replaced Maurice Chevalier in the operetta Ça,
