Himanshu Kumar Suri, known as Heems, was born on July 6, 1985, in Queens, New York. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 2003 and later from Wesleyan University with a degree in economics. Suri's early career was in the financial sector before his success in music. Of Punjabi-Indian descent, Heems formed the alternative hip-hop group Das Racist in 2008 with college friend Victor Vazquez (Kool A.D.) and high school friend Ashok Kondabolu.
