Gene Rockwell, born Gert Smit on December 27, 1944, in Krugersdorp, South
Africa, was a South African singer. At age 15, he won his first talent
competition at Durban's Little Top. In his teens, Rockwell formed The Blue
Angels, later renamed The Falcons in 1963. Rockwell's breakthrough came with his
1965 rendition of "Heart", which topped the LM Radio Top 20 chart. He continued
to perform and record music, becoming a staple of the dance scene in South
Africa. Rockwell passed away on July 3, 1998, at the age of 53 due to cancer.
