Aníbal Augusto Sardinha, known professionally as Garoto, was born on June 28,
1915, in São Paulo, Brazil. He began playing various plucked string instruments
at a young age and started performing locally by 11. His professional career
launched in the early 1930s with ensembles like Verde e Amarelo and Chorões
Sertanejos. In 1939, he joined Carmen Miranda's ensemble, Bando da Lua, touring
the United States and appearing in films such as Down Argentine Way (1940) and
