The Gabrieli Consort & Players, a British ensemble specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music on period instruments, was founded by Paul McCreesh in 1982 in Manchester. The group is named after Andrea Gabrieli and his nephew Giovanni, prominent figures in the musical life of 16th-century Venice. Their early success included critical acclaim for their reconstructions of historical musical events, notably the recording, A Venetian Coronation Ceremony 1595 released in 1990.
