Friction, originally known as Maru Sankaku Shikaku, was formed in 1971 in Tokyo
by bassist Reck, saxophonist Chico Hige, and drummer Sakuro Watanabe. The group
is considered a pioneering force in Japan's alternative rock scene. In the
mid-1970s, they changed their name to 3/3 and relocated to the United States,
where Reck and Chico formed Teenage Jesus and the Jerks with Lydia Lunch and
James Chance before returning to Japan. Renaming themselves Friction, they
