Frances Langford was an American singer and actress who was born as Julia
Frances Langford in 1913. She originally trained as an opera singer before a
medical procedure altered her vocal range to a contralto, leading her to adopt a
big band style. Langford achieved professional recognition during the Golden Age
of Radio and made a film debut in Every Night at Eight (1935), where she
introduced the song “I'm in the Mood for Love”. She was famous for entertaining
troops on USO tours during World War II, earning the nickname “GI Nightingale”.
