Ewan MacColl, born James Henry Miller on January 25, 1915, in Broughton, Lancashire, England, was a British folk singer-songwriter. He left school in 1930 and joined the Young Communist League and an amateur acting troupe called the Clarion Players. In 1936, he co-founded the Theatre Union with his wife Joan Littlewood. MacColl's musical career began in earnest when he left the theatre group to focus on folk music in 1953. He also began recording with Topic Records in 1950 and released "The Asphalter's Song."
