The English Baroque Soloists is a British period-instrument chamber orchestra
founded by conductor John Eliot Gardiner in 1978. Evolving from the Monteverdi
Orchestra, it adopted period instruments in the late 1970s and gave its first
concert under its current name at the 1977 Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.
The ensemble specializes in Baroque and Classical repertoire and has frequently
performed with the Monteverdi Choir. In 1990, Gardiner also established the
Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique for later-period works. The English
