Elizabeth Cotten
Elizabeth Cotten was an American folk and blues musician born as Elizabeth
Nevills on January 5, 1893, in or near Chapel Hill. She achieved professional
recognition for a musical style characterized by her unique left-handed
fingerpicking technique known as "Cotten picking". She achieved professional
recognition for a career that began after she taught herself to play the banjo
and guitar as a child and wrote the song "Freight Train" in her early teens.
