Don Campbell was born on January 8, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri, and later
moved to Los Angeles where he studied commercial art at Los Angeles
Trade–Technical College before turning to dance. In 1971, he joined the cast of
Soul Train, becoming a featured dancer until 1973 when he was dismissed after
demanding fair pay for performers; this prompted him to recruit fellow dismissed
dancers and found the troupe that would become The Lockers. Campbell released
the single "The Campbellock" in 1972, showcasing the high‑flying choreography
