Dez Fafara, lead singer of the band Coal Chamber, left his bandmates to form his
own groove metal and melodic death metal project, Deathride, in 2002. Forced to
change the name due to another band with the same name, he chose DevilDriver—a
reference to an obscure religious ritual—and recorded a self-titled debut album
released the following year. In 2004, the band—which recorded The Fury of Our
Maker’s Hand (2005)—underwent a lineup change with the addition of guitarist
