Denyce Graves, born on March 7, 1964, in Washington D.C., is an American
mezzo-soprano opera singer. She graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the
Arts and studied voice at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and New England
Conservatory of Music with Helen Hodam. Graves began her professional career
after joining the Wolf Trap Opera Company and the Houston Opera Studio from 1988
to 1990. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1995, performing in
