David Allan Coe (born September 6 ,1939 in Akron, Ohio) was an American singer,
songwriter, and guitarist. After years in reform schools and prisons, he began
busking on Nashville streets and later signed with Columbia Records. His debut
Penitentiary Blues (1970) showcased a blues‑influenced sound that shifted toward
country, leading to the outlaw‑style The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy (1974).
The single "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" (1975) reached number 8 on the
