John Ray Sechler, known professionally as Curly Seckler, was born on December
25, 1919, in China Grove, North Carolina. He learned to play the organ from his
mother and the five-string banjo from local musician Happy Trexler. In 1949,
Sechler joined Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, contributing
to over 130 recordings until 1962. After leaving the band, he took a break from
music but returned in 1973 as part of Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass Band.
Following Flatt’s death in 1979, Seckler led the band until his retirement in
