Cécile Schott, known professionally as Colleen, was born in 1976 in Montargis,
France. She initially focused on literature before picking up a guitar in high
school and joining a noise pop group. Schott began her music career under the
name Colleen in 2001 after receiving ACID Pro music production software from a
friend. Her self-titled debut album was self-released in 2002. She followed this
with Everyone Alive Wants Answers in 2003, which featured heavily modified
