Chubby Jackson, born Greig Steward Jackson on October 25, 1918, in New York
City, was an American jazz double bass player. Raised by musician parents in
Vaudeville and Broadway, Jackson began his career at sixteen as a clarinetist
before switching to the double bass. He performed with big bands led by Raymond
Scott, Jan Savitt, and Henry Busse starting in 1939. Jackson's breakthrough came
with Charlie Barnet’s band from 1941 to 1943, followed by Woody Herman’s first
