Christian Thielemann, a German conductor born in Berlin on April 1, 1959, has
conducted the Vienna New Year’s Concert on several occasions. After beginning
his musical training on the piano at the age of five and later on the viola, he
studied composition and conducting. In 1979, he assisted Herbert von Karajan
with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Salzburg Festival, before
going on to work with Daniel Barenboim at the Bayreuth Festival. Appointed
