Richard Patrick Bennett, known professionally as Charlie Chaplin, was born in
Jamaica and began his career as a dancehall and ragga deejay and singer. He
started working with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi collective in 1980, gaining
popularity for his focus on cultural and social themes rather than the prevalent
"slack" lyrics of the time. His debut album, Presenting Charlie Chaplin, was
produced by Roy Cousins in 1982, followed by several more albums over the next
