Canray Fontenot was born on October 16, 1922, in L'Anse aux Vaches near Basile,
Louisiana. He began performing with Amédé Ardoin by 1934 and later formed a
string band with George Lenard and Paul Frank. In 1948, Fontenot partnered with
Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin to form the Duralde Ramblers, becoming popular in
southwest Louisiana. His original songs "Joe Pitre a Deux Femmes", "Les Barres
de la Prison", and "Bonsoir Moreau" became standards in Cajun and Zydeco music
repertoires. In 1966, Fontenot and Ardoin performed at the Newport Folk Festival
