Caiphus Katse Semenya is a South African musician born on August 19, 1939. He
began his career in 1956 leading the jazz vocal group Katzenjammer Kids. In
1959, he joined the ensemble of the musical King Kong, which performed in London
in 1961. Semenya moved to the United States in 1964 after appearing in the
musical Sponono on Broadway. He collaborated with Jonas Gwangwa on the musical
Buwa. Semenya performed in the bands of Big Black and Hugh Masekela and his
compositions were recorded by Herb Alpert and Nina Simone. He provided brass
