Benjamin Clarence Jackson, known professionally as Bull Moose Jackson, was born
on 22 April 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio, and emerged as a tenor saxophonist and
vocalist in the swing, blues, and rhythm‑and‑blues scenes. He began playing
violin as a child before taking up the saxophone during his high‑school years,
joining the Harlem Hotshots and later being hired by bandleader Lucky Millinder
in 1943, where he earned the nickname Bull Moose for his imposing appearance.
