Billy Wright
Billy Wright, born William Wright on May 21, 1932, in Atlanta, Georgia, was an
American singer. Wright began his career singing gospel and performing in tent
shows as a dancer and female impersonator. He caught the attention of
saxophonist Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams, who recommended him to Savoy Records.
Wright's first record, "Blues for My Baby", reached number 3 on the Billboard
R&B chart in 1949. Known as the "Prince of the Blues," he was a key figure in
Atlanta's post-World War II blues scene and influenced rock-and-roll pioneer
