Bill Dobbins
Bill Dobbins, born William Dobbins on April 25, 1947, in Akron, Ohio, is an
American pianist, composer, big band leader, and jazz educator. He began as a
classical pianist working with notable figures like Pierre Boulez and Lukas
Foss, winning the International Gaudeamus Prize for Interpreters of Contemporary
Music in 1972. Dobbins started teaching at the Eastman School of Music in
Rochester, New York, in 1973, leading its jazz department from 1989. He led the
WDR Big Band Cologne from 1994 to 2002, collaborating with artists such as Clark
