John Marshall “Big John” Greer was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on
21 November 1923. A tenor saxophonist and vocalist, he joined Lucky Millinder’s
band after Henry Glover recommended him to replace Bull Moore Jackson in 1948.
Greer’s single, "Got You on My Mind", was recorded in October 1951 and became
his biggest hit. He moved to Groove Records in 1953, releasing "We Wanna See
Santa Claus Do the Mambo" in 1954, and later signed with King Records in 1956,
recording a handful of tracks. Greer died in Hot Springs on 12 May 1972.
