Betty Roché was an American jazz and blues singer who was born as Mary Elizabeth
Roché in 1918 in Wilmington. She began a professional career in 1939 after
winning a talent competition at the Apollo Theater and later performed with the
Savoy Sultans. Roché is best known for her version of the song “Take the ‘A’
Train” with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which she performed in the film
Reveille with Beverly (1944). She also sang in the 1943 Carnegie Hall premiere
