Barry Ries, born on March 16, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio, is an American jazz
trumpeter and horn player. He began percussion lessons with his father and took
up the trumpet at 11, later performing with regional rock groups. In 1970, Ries
began studying at the University of North Texas, where he joined the One O’Clock
Band and performed with ensembles led by Ted Weems Jr., Ray Anthony, and Ralph
Marterie. After graduation he returned to Cincinnati to work with pianist Ed
Moss before relocating to Miami in 1977 to collaborate with
