Allen Shelton, born on July 2, 1936, was an American five-string banjo player.
He began playing the banjo at fourteen. He joined Jim & Jesse and the Virginia
Boys and began recording for Columbia Records in 1960. Shelton left the band in
1966 but returned a decade later. He released his solo album Shelton Special on
Rounder Records in 1977. Known for his experimental picking style, Shelton
recorded 89 songs with Jim & Jesse. He died at age 73 on November 21, 2009 due
to leukemia and was posthumously inducted into the International Bluegrass Music
Hall of Fame in 2018.
