Born in Blackpool, Lancashire (England), on September 29, 1973, Alfie Boe's
career took a fortuitous turn on the stages of musicals and in recordings of
classical, jazz and popular works. An opera buff as a child, he was working in a
car body shop when a client suggested he audition in London, which he won, and
which enabled him to sing in a show based on the works of Gilbert & Sullivan.
After winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, he joined the Opera
Company, where he was spotted by director Baz Luhrmann, who was looking for
