Alan Gilbert, born on February 23, 1967, in New York City, is an American
conductor and violinist. The son of two New York Philharmonic violinists, he
began his musical education at a young age. Gilbert studied music at Harvard
University and later pursued conducting studies at the Curtis Institute of Music
and the Juilliard School. Gilbert's career took off in the mid-1990s when he
served as an assistant conductor with the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 1997.
